A is for Analytics
Teaching analytics terminology to kids.
From "Analytics" to "Z-Score," an illustrated children's book that introduces kids (and grownups) to an analytics term for every letter of the alphabet.
What's inside
Each page offers the technical definition of an analytics term, a simplified explanation for children, and an illustration to help visualize the concept. Now kids can confidently explain what "Normal Distribution" means, or what a "Trended Graph" looks like, and easily impress friends and family.
It's also full of fun llama illustrations. Because who doesn't love llamas.
The story behind it
While we're doing a lot of work at the higher-education level to prepare the next generation of analysts, we felt education about data needed to start at a much younger age. And so the idea for a children's book was born.
We believe that if we can get children interested in data and analytics at a very young age, we have the ability to create a new generation of critical thinkers. The kind who can help take back the world from the bad actors who have used data for evil rather than good.
The book is aimed at early readers but designed to be entertaining and educational for people of all ages. We took key analytics terms for each letter in the alphabet and paired each letter with a formal definition, a more child-friendly explanation, and an illustration to help the reader visualize the concept.
The initial sketches were made in January 2021. Getting the book ready for print and ready to sell to the public has been an incredibly challenging and rewarding process.
It would have been much easier to grab a few terms, slap a simple definition on each, and add some stock photos. But we wanted to do this right. We wanted this book to be taken seriously, because the challenge we're trying to solve is an incredibly serious one.
